Gregory M. Smith

Major (Retired) Gregory M. Smith was in the Army from 1979 to 1996, then again from 2004 to 2007. An Arizona native, he graduated from ROTC and immediately went into the Army as a tank platoon leader. He held various jobs in the Army, to include platoon leader, company XO, company commander, military history instructor, assistant battalion ops officer, and ops officer for a Homeland Defense unit. In December 1993 he received his Master's degree in Administration from Central Michigan University. His military awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Southwest Asia Service Medal, the Liberation of Kuwait Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Valorous Unit Award, and the Parachutist Badge.

During the Gulf War, Major Smith, then a captain, served with the First Battalion, 34th Armor (M1A1), as part of the First Infantry Division. During the Iraq War, he was activated out of retirement to serve as the Information Management Officer for the Combined and Joint Special Operations Task force - Arabian Peninsula.

In between combat tours, he spent 8 years working for HPS Simulations, mainly with John Tiller in creating the Panzer Campaign series of computer games. After his second Army retirement, he amicably left HPS and decided to try and work with his first wargaming love – the board game side of the hobby. This led to the creation of “The Hunters.” Due to the success of the Hunters, Greg was able to continue his design work with GMT and then Compass Games.
